What Is HSIE?
What is SOSE?
SOSE stands for the Studies of Society and Environments and is generally defined as the study and understanding of people and their relationsip with natural phenomena and society. Social science is a complex subject and covers a large area of studies for e.g. Archaelogy, History, Geography, Economics, Business, Civics and Citizenship, Asian studies and Ecology, Anthropology, Religion, law, Politics, and much more. Human Science and Its environment (HSIE) has been integrated into the syllabus and learning is spread over k-12 and is one of the primary key learning arears (KLA's). The mainstream of HSIE in the primary syllabus is differentiated into six main strands;
1) Time, Continuity and change
2) Place and Space
3) Culture
4) Resources
5) Natural and Social Systems
6) Investigation, Communication and Participation
Why is it so important?
Traditionally HSIE was not deemed as important, however according to recent studies it has proven HSIE is important for children. Children's perception, behaviour, attitudes, relationship with society and natural phenomena revolves around the complexity of HSIE. HSIE predominately helps people find logical acceptable behaviour, moulding their basic morals and ethics and helping them socialise with society and interactions with the natural phenomena. Studies of social science also benefits individiuals to understand history, their origins and other cultures around them.
Eversince the World has been introduced to the borderless era of Globalisation, and evolving technologies available to society suddenly distance has been diminished and communication with others around the world have become more effective and takes a matter of only micro seconds. Once the bordless era has emerges suddenly people have been exposed to different cultures and subsequently suffer from sudden 'cultural shock'. HSIE studies help people understand the complexity and diversity of the world and helps them build a bridge to if not adjust, but to accept and understand the diversity of cultures, religion, countries and their natural environment.
Students need to understand 'Global Impact' affects every individual around the world in different ways and can be mediated through Cultural, Demographics, Ethnic, Gender and Personal Values. For instance during recession, America has been recently affected with recession subsequently leaving a rippling affect expanding to other countries. Financially people were affected and peoples jobs were in jeopardy. What happens when family has no income? People lose their homes, family relationship breaks down, and some many may suffer depression. So this obviously affects people financially and emotionally.
